"I was asked to create an image of the effect of the Iraqi War on the people of La Jolla and to include religion, economics, patriotism and protest as subject matter. I searched the newspaper's photo archives for images that conveyed those themes and saturated them in Photoshop using reds and blues and created this 'Captain America' design.

"The subject matter was 'Artists on the Cutting Edge' so I wanted to create a design that was minimalist and edgy at the same time. The silk screen effect was accomplished using a white photo reduced to two colors and a simple gradient background. I also wrote the accompanying story." - LV
